During one's lifetime, there are many opportunities to leave a lasting legacy, but that is never more prevalent than with family members. Watching my seven year old grandson play at a McDonalds climbing frame the other day brought back memories of my childhood which was nothing like how today's children spend their time. We played outside in all sorts of weather, with objects we found lying around and created our own fantasies with nothing more than a sand pit and a bucket and spade. Does this foster more creativity than today's video games? I would like to think so and unfortunately I probably won't be around to see any studies comparing the differences. My sister and I pretended to be statues while standing on the entrance posts of my grandparent's driveway. We were there for hours wondering if the cars that went by would think we were part of the entrance posts! I strive to be a good grandparent and spend time on basic activities which include having the grandchildren help with mulching, playing roof ball (which entails nothing more than throwing a ball on the roof) and Putt Putt. I hope I am able to leave a legacy of stability and common sense with the grandchildren. I feel as if I was left with this from my parents.
Sometimes, legacies are not good. I overcame my parents' prejudicial views on race. A somewhat sheltered upbringing shielded me from the atrocities that happened in the US in the 1960's and when I saw the movie, "Mississippi Burning," I was grateful that I was no longer influenced by my parent's views.
Despite this one item, I hope that I am able to translate what I feel is a good foundation to my professional life. My father has been gone for over ten years, yet I am still emotional when I hear the song "In the Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics that was played at his funeral. I am fortunate that despite the distance between us, we were able to maintain a strong father/daughter relationship.
